Quick answer: To run the Vertuo Next cleaning cycle, eject any capsule, rinse and fill the tank with fresh drinking water, put a container of at least 1 L beneath the outlet and lock the machine head. Wait for a steady white ready light, then press the button three times within two seconds. The button blinks orange and water flow can take nearly two minutes to begin; allow up to about seven minutes for the full cycle.
Cleaning versus descaling
This is a water-only rinse of the coffee path and removable waste parts. It is different from descaling, which requires the manufacturer’s separate sequence and solution. The cycle can be useful if old coffee residue is present; our grounds-in-cup guide helps if residue continues afterward.
Before pressing the button
- Fresh water in the clean tank and a stable 1 L or larger catch vessel
- An empty capsule container, drip tray and rinsed cup support
- No capsule in the head
Safety: Do not open the head during the cleaning program. Hot water can emerge after a delay. Do not put the main appliance in a dishwasher or immerse it; avoid abrasive cleaners and solvents.

Run the cycle
- Rinse the tank and lid, fill with fresh drinking water and reinstall them. Rinse the cup support; position a container of at least 34 fl oz (1 L) below the coffee outlet.
- Open the head to eject the used capsule. Empty and rinse the capsule container and drip tray. Close and lock the head with no capsule inside.
- Wait until the light is steady white. Press the button three times within two seconds. Expect orange blinking; the flow may take some time to start.
- Let the program finish automatically, up to around seven minutes. The button returns to a steady light. Empty the catch vessel and wipe the coffee outlet with a clean damp cloth after cooling.
If it does not run
Recheck that the head is locked, no capsule remains and the machine has finished heating. Do not confuse the triple press with the five-press factory reset, which changes stored cup settings; see our cup-volume guide before resetting. If the machine still will not pump water, use the flow diagnosis.
FAQ
Can I stop it?
Nespresso says a press can stop the procedure, though it may not stop instantly. Keep the head closed until it does.
Do I insert a capsule?
No. Run cleaning with an empty head.
