De’Longhi Magnifica Evo Leaking Water? Locate It Before Replacing Parts

Water in the drip tray or on the counter? Find the source on your Magnifica Evo, check the removable tank and tray safely, and know when a leak needs service.

Before you start

Unplug the machine before opening panels or touching internal components. Stop if you see damaged wiring, smell burning, or are unsure about a pressurized or electrical part.

Quick answer: If your De’Longhi Magnifica Evo seems to leak, locate the water before ordering a seal. Water collected inside the drip tray after startup, shutdown or milk drinks can be normal. Water escaping onto the worktop is different: empty and fully reassemble the drip tray, including its grille; check for a recent filling spill. If a removed water tank continues to drip on its own, isolate that removable part. If fresh water keeps appearing under the machine housing after these checks, stop using the machine, unplug it safely and contact service. A puddle alone does not identify an internal hose or valve.

This guide covers the De’Longhi Magnifica Evo ECAM29X family. The manufacturer’s tray and condensate guidance cited below is specifically available for ECAM29X.6Y / .8Y EX:2, with similar support entries for other Evo panels. Check the full model code on your rating label, especially before ordering a tank or tray. The cover is an illustrative generic machine.

First separate collected water from an actual leak

Magnifica Evo water-location diagnostic: water inside the drip tray may be expected, a removed tank can be checked separately, and persistent water below the case needs service
Original CoffeeFixGuide location map. It compares three observations without claiming to show the machine’s internal water path.
Where is the water? What it can mean Best next check
Only inside the drip tray, particularly after rinse cycles De’Longhi says internal flushing and automatic rinses send water to the tray. Empty it, clean it and reinstall every removable piece.
On the counter at the tray/front edge The tray may have overflowed or not been reassembled correctly. The EX:2 help center specifically mentions a missing drip-tray grille. Check the level, grille and how the tray seats. Dry the counter before observing again.
At the detached water tank on a separate dry surface Possible damage or a problem at the removable tank; a few handling drops alone prove little. Use the isolation check below; ask for a part matched to your exact ECAM code if it keeps leaking.
Fresh water repeatedly pools below the closed case while the tray is not overflowing The source has not been established from outside. It may require internal inspection. Stop use, switch off and unplug safely, then request qualified service.

1. Check the drip tray and the first few minutes after a drink

A surprising amount of water in the tray is not automatically a fault. De’Longhi explains that automatic rinses at startup and shutdown, and internal flushing between coffee and milk deliveries, drain into it. Its Magnifica Evo support also describes small puffs of steam or condensate after switch-off as part of normal operation; emptying the tray helps limit the effect. Some water in the grounds container after a descale or rinse is also described by the manufacturer as normal. An unusually large amount in the grounds container warrants support.

  1. Let the machine finish its current cycle. Switch it off normally if you need to remove parts, allow hot outlets to cool and keep water away from the plug and socket.
  2. Pull out the tray carefully. Empty it and check whether the water had reached its level indicator or lip. Clean and dry the tray, grille and grounds container.
  3. Reinstall the drip-tray grille and grounds container, then seat the whole tray fully. De’Longhi’s model-specific help center names an omitted grille as one possible explanation when water appears on the surface under the machine.
  4. Dry the surrounding worktop. If it is safe and dry near the power supply, observe where water first appears during one ordinary use. If it remains contained in the tray, that observation is different from a recurring puddle beneath the case.

Do not assume a specific number of millilitres per coffee is “normal”: it varies with rinses and drinks. The useful evidence is whether the water stays in the designed catch tray, whether the tray was full, and whether the exterior becomes wet again.

2. Isolate a suspected water-tank leak

This is an editorial external check to separate a removable tank from the machine; De’Longhi does not prescribe it as a service test for every ECAM29X revision. If you just filled the tank, wipe the outside first. A drip left by handling or lifting the tank is not enough evidence for a replacement.

  1. Switch off and unplug the machine in a dry area. Remove the tank, dry its outside and check for visible cracks or damage. Do not disassemble or pry at its outlet valve.
  2. Fill it with plain water no higher than its MAX mark. Set it upright on a clean, dry, shallow tray away from the powered appliance. Keep the tank stable and observe it briefly.
  3. If the tank itself continually leaves fresh water on that separate dry tray, do not return it to an energized machine. Record the complete model code and request advice on the correct replacement tank from De’Longhi.
  4. If the detached tank stays dry, reinstall it carefully according to your model manual and seat it fully. Persistent water below the machine still needs investigation; the isolated dry tank does not prove any particular internal part has failed.

Do not use sealant or tape on a drinking-water tank and do not buy a generic “Magnifica” tank without checking the complete ECAM number and revision.

3. If water appears during brewing or from beneath the housing

Note whether it begins at startup rinse, a coffee drink, hot-water delivery or a milk-cleaning step. Also note whether coffee and hot water still reach their outlets. These observations help a service technician distinguish a tray or removable-part problem from something inside the case. If the machine has no coffee output at the same time, use that guide for the symptom description, but do not keep running a machine that is pooling water outside.

Stop before another test if water approaches the cord, plug or outlet, appears to come from inside the closed case, or if there is visible damage, smoke or a burning smell. Switch off and disconnect power only when it is safe to do so; otherwise isolate power safely and obtain professional help. Do not open the outer case or reach into a wet powered machine.

If the external tray and tank checks do not resolve the issue, contact De’Longhi with the model and serial numbers, when the water first appears, its location and a photograph of the dry/then-wet worktop. The manufacturer requests the model, serial number and purchase details for support. No credible part recommendation is possible from a puddle alone.

What you need

  • A soft dry cloth and a clean shallow tray to isolate a removed water tank.
  • Your full ECAM29X code and the matching user manual.
  • A photo or short note of where and when the water appears. No screwdrivers or internal parts are needed for these checks.

Frequently asked questions

Is water in my Magnifica Evo drip tray normal?

Yes, some water is expected from automatic rinses and internal flushing. Empty and clean the tray regularly. Water spilling out of a full tray, or fresh water repeatedly pooling under a correctly fitted tray, needs a different check.

Why is there a little water in the grounds container?

De’Longhi describes some moisture there as normal, including after a rinse or descale. If the amount is unusually large or the counter is becoming wet, contact support rather than calling it normal without further inspection.

Can I keep using it if water leaks from underneath?

Do not continue if water is pooling outside the machine or can reach an electrical connection. Switch off and unplug safely. After checking the removable tray and tank, request service if the source remains inside or underneath the closed case.

Should I buy a gasket, valve or new water tank?

Only after the leak has been isolated and the replacement matched to the full model code. A tank that stays dry when removed does not establish which internal component, if any, is responsible.
