How to Descale a De’Longhi Magnifica Evo: Complete Guide

Descale a De’Longhi Magnifica Evo safely with the correct EcoDecalk dose, two complete rinse stages, and model-specific button sequence.

Descaling a DeLonghi Magnifica Evo by adding descaling solution to the water tank
Before you start

Unplug the machine before opening panels or touching internal components. Stop if you see damaged wiring, smell burning, or are unsure about a pressurized or electrical part.

On a De’Longhi Magnifica Evo ECAM29X.6Y or ECAM29X.8Y EX:2, descaling takes about 30 minutes. Fit the hot-water spout, remove the water filter, add 100 ml of De’Longhi descaler and 1 litre of water, then complete the automatic descaling stage and both fresh-water rinses. Do not interrupt the program once it has started.

Before you follow these steps

Check the product code on the label underneath your machine or in its manual. This step-by-step sequence is verified for the current ECAM29X.6Y / ECAM29X.8Y EX:2 panel, including North American LatteCrema models in that family. Magnifica Evo machines with codes such as ECAM29X.2Y, 29X.3Y, or 29X.4Y can use a different control panel and steam control. The descaler quantities are similar, but you should use the Quick Guide for that exact code rather than guessing which button to press.

What you need

ItemOfficial specification
DescalerDe’Longhi EcoDecalk or the De’Longhi descaler supplied for the machine
Descaler amount100 ml, up to level A in the tank
Water for solution1 litre, up to level B in the tank
Collection containerAt least 2 litres
Fresh rinse waterTwo tanks filled to MAX
TimeAbout 30 minutes for the EX:2 procedure

Use only a descaler intended for the machine. De’Longhi warns that an unsuitable product or an incorrectly completed cycle can cause faults outside warranty coverage. Do not use vinegar, bleach, dish soap, or a mixture of cleaning chemicals.

How to descale a Magnifica Evo ECAM29X.6Y / 29X.8Y EX:2

1. Prepare the machine

  1. Leave the machine switched on and make sure the removable hot-water spout is fitted. Remove the milk carafe if it is attached.
  2. Press and hold the descale/clean button for at least 5 seconds. Its LED should begin flashing rapidly, and the mild-intensity indicator should illuminate to show stage 1.
  3. Remove, empty, and refit the drip tray and coffee-grounds container.
  4. Empty the water tank completely. If a water-softener filter is installed, remove it and keep it safe for the second rinse.

2. Mix the descaling solution

  1. Pour 100 ml of De’Longhi descaler into the tank, stopping at the A mark.
  2. Add fresh water until the level reaches the B mark—one litre of water for the official dose.
  3. Reinstall the tank. Place an empty container with a capacity of at least 2 litres under both the coffee outlets and the hot-water spout.

Protect the worktop: descaler can mark delicate surfaces. Wipe up a spill immediately. The liquid and the spouts can also be hot, so keep hands away while the pump is running.

3. Run the descaling stage

  1. Press the flashing descale/clean button once to start.
  2. Let the machine work without interruption. For roughly 15 minutes, it will alternate between pauses and deliveries from the hot-water and coffee outlets. Pauses and changes in pump sound during this stage are normal.
  3. Wait until the low-water indicator illuminates. That signals the end of the descaling-solution stage—not the end of the entire procedure.

4. Complete the first rinse

  1. Empty the 2-litre collection container.
  2. Remove the water tank, discard any remaining solution, and rinse the tank under running water.
  3. Fill the tank with fresh drinking water all the way to MAX. Do not reinstall the water filter yet.
  4. Return the tank and empty container to position, then press the rapidly flashing descale/clean button. The medium-intensity LED should blink during this rinse.
  5. Wait until the low-water indicator comes on again.

5. Complete the second rinse

  1. Empty the collection container again.
  2. Remove and empty the tank. Reinstall the water-softener filter now, if you use one, and fill the tank with fresh drinking water to MAX.
  3. Return the tank and collection container, then press the rapidly flashing descale/clean button. The strong-intensity LED should blink during this stage.
  4. Wait for the cycle to finish. The pre-ground-coffee indicator lights when the programmed descaling sequence has ended correctly.
  5. Empty the collection container, drip tray, and grounds container, then reinstall them. It is normal to find some rinse water in the grounds container.
  6. When the low-water light appears, fill the tank with fresh water and reinstall it. The machine is ready to use.

Why the machine may request another rinse

If a rinse tank was not filled completely to the MAX line, the machine can request a third rinse to ensure no descaler remains in the internal water paths. This is not a fault. Empty the drip tray and collection vessel, fill the tank to MAX with fresh water, and repeat the rinse stage indicated by the control panel.

Magnifica Evo descaling problems

SymptomWhat to check
The cycle will not startConfirm the machine is on, the hot-water spout is fully fitted, and you held the correct descale/clean button for at least 5 seconds. Then check your exact model code and panel version.
The machine appears to pauseAutomatic pauses are part of the first stage. Do not switch off the machine while the descaling indicator is blinking.
The light remains onThe full program may not have reached its completion signal. Finish every requested rinse and refill the tank when prompted; simply running diluted descaler through a normal hot-water cycle does not complete the programmed sequence.
A third rinse is requestedA previous rinse tank was probably below MAX. Refill to MAX and complete the additional rinse.
There is water in the grounds containerA small amount after descaling is explicitly described by De’Longhi as normal.
No water flows or the pump stays unusually loudStop if the tank is full but no outlet delivers water, or if leaking, a burning smell, or an electrical fault appears. Check that the tank and hot-water spout are seated, then contact De’Longhi support rather than repeatedly restarting the cycle.

How often should you descale?

Descale when the red descaling indicator appears. The interval is calculated from use and the water-hardness setting, so there is no single calendar schedule that fits every home. Test your water and make sure the hardness level saved in the machine matches the result. A compatible water filter can reduce mineral exposure, but it does not remove scale that has already formed and it does not replace the prompted cycle.
