If the steam wand on your Breville Barista Express is not working, begin with the simple checks: wait until the STEAM/HOT WATER light stops flashing, fill and fully seat the water tank, turn the dial completely to STEAM, then inspect the tip for dried milk. A blocked tip is the most common user-serviceable cause; weak steam after cleaning and descaling may require professional service.
Quick diagnosis
- Light still flashing: the machine is heating for steam; wait.
- No sound and no steam: confirm the dial is fully in the STEAM position and the tank is seated.
- Pump pulses but little steam exits: clean the holes in the wand tip.
- Steam is wet or weak from a clean tip: purge condensation, then check whether descaling is due.
- Steam works but milk will not foam: correct the milk level and tip position before assuming a fault.

What is normal before steam starts?
This guide is for the Breville Barista Express BES870/BES870XL. When you turn the selector to STEAM, the STEAM/HOT WATER light flashes while the thermocoil heats to steaming temperature. Condensed water may come from the wand during this stage, and a pulsing pump sound is normal. Breville says the wand is ready when the light stops flashing.
A few seconds of water, a heating pause and a rhythmic pumping sound do not by themselves indicate a failed steam wand. Diagnose the machine only after it reaches steam-ready state.
Match the symptom to the likely cause
| Symptom | Likely cause | First action |
|---|---|---|
| Steam light keeps flashing | Machine is still heating or dial position is wrong | Wait for ready; return dial to STANDBY and retry |
| No steam, tank appears full | Tank is not locked down or dial is not fully turned | Reseat tank and rotate dial completely to STEAM |
| Steam exits only one side of the tip | One or more tip holes are blocked | Cool the machine and use the supplied cleaning pin |
| Very weak steam after a long warm-up | Blocked tip or mineral restriction | Clean the tip, then descale if due |
| Steam is strong but milk stays flat | Technique, milk quantity or tip depth | Start with cold milk and form a vortex |
| No group water, hot water or steam | Broader water-delivery problem | Use the no-water diagnostic |
How to fix a Barista Express steam wand
1. Let the machine finish heating
Turn the dial to STANDBY, let the machine reach normal operating temperature, then select STEAM. Keep the tip over the drip tray. Wait until the steam light stops flashing before judging output. If the machine was just turned on, this eliminates a normal warm-up delay.
2. Fill and reseat the water tank
Switch the dial back to STANDBY. Fill the tank with cold water and push it down completely so the outlet engages. A tank can look correctly installed while sitting slightly high. Never repeatedly run the pump with an empty tank.
3. Purge the wand over the drip tray
When the steam-ready light is steady, briefly open STEAM with the wand aimed into the drip tray. This clears condensation and tells you whether all tip holes are open. Return the dial to STANDBY before touching or cleaning the wand; metal surfaces and expelled water may be hot.
4. Clear blocked tip holes safely
Turn the machine off, unplug it and allow the wand to cool. Use the pin on the end of Breville’s supplied cleaning tool to clear each blocked hole. Insert the pin gently; do not enlarge the openings with a drill bit, sewing needle or other hard tool.
5. Remove and soak the tip if needed
If the wand remains blocked, Breville instructs owners to remove the tip with the integrated spanner in the cleaning tool and soak the tip in hot water. Clear its holes with the supplied pin, rinse it, then reinstall it securely. Work only with the machine switched off, unplugged and cool.
6. Descale when steam and water flow are both weak
Mineral buildup can restrict more than one water path. Descaling is especially relevant when steam weakened gradually and hot-water or group-head flow also declined. Follow the model-specific Barista Express descaling procedure. A cleaning-tablet cycle removes coffee oils and is not a replacement for descaling.
Steam works, but the milk does not froth
If the wand produces a strong jet, the machine may be functioning normally. Use fresh, cold milk and fill the jug to just below the “V” at the bottom of its spout. Start with the tip approximately 1–2 cm below the surface near the side of the jug. Create a whirlpool, then bring the tip close enough to the surface to introduce air without large splashes.
Breville recommends finishing around 60–65°C (140–149°F). Return the dial to STANDBY before removing the jug. Large bubbles usually mean the tip spent too long above the surface; hot flat milk usually means it stayed too deep throughout the process.
Prevent the wand from blocking again
- Wipe the wand with a damp cloth immediately after every milk session.
- Aim the tip over the drip tray and briefly purge steam after wiping.
- Do not let milk dry on or inside the tip.
- Use the cleaning pin only after switching off and cooling the machine.
- Follow the descaling schedule appropriate for your water and filter use.
- Never immerse the full steam wand or machine housing in water.
When to stop and arrange service
Contact Breville or a qualified espresso-machine technician if the clean wand still produces no steam after the tank, warm-up, dial position and descaling checks. Service is also appropriate if steam escapes inside the case, the selector leaks, the machine trips power, or both heating and pumping behavior have changed.
Do not open the appliance to test the thermocoil, solenoid valves or internal hoses. The machine contains mains-voltage components and can retain hot water under pressure. Breville’s manual directs maintenance beyond routine cleaning to Consumer Support.
Frequently asked questions
Why is water coming from the steam wand instead of steam?
A short discharge of condensed water while the machine heats is normal. Keep the wand over the drip tray and wait until the STEAM/HOT WATER light stops flashing. Continuous water with no steam after warm-up may indicate a heating or selector problem.
Why is my Breville steam wand pressure weak?
First inspect the tip holes for dried milk. If they are clear, confirm the water tank is full and seated, then compare hot-water and group-head flow. Weakness across several functions makes scale or an internal water-path problem more likely.
Can I use vinegar to unclog the steam wand?
Use the mechanical cleaning method and descaling product specified for the machine. Do not soak attached seals or run an improvised concentrated acid through the appliance. The removable metal tip can be soaked in hot water as described by Breville.
How often should I purge the steam wand?
Purge briefly after every use, immediately after wiping the wand. This clears milk remaining inside before it dries and blocks a tip hole.
