How to fix a Barista Express steam wand
1. Let the machine finish heating
Turn the dial to STANDBY, let the machine reach normal operating temperature, then select STEAM. Keep the tip over the drip tray. Wait until the steam light stops flashing before judging output. If the machine was just turned on, this eliminates a normal warm-up delay.
2. Fill and reseat the water tank
Switch the dial back to STANDBY. Fill the tank with cold water and push it down completely so the outlet engages. A tank can look correctly installed while sitting slightly high. Never repeatedly run the pump with an empty tank.
3. Purge the wand over the drip tray
When the steam-ready light is steady, briefly open STEAM with the wand aimed into the drip tray. This clears condensation and tells you whether all tip holes are open. Return the dial to STANDBY before touching or cleaning the wand; metal surfaces and expelled water may be hot.
4. Clear blocked tip holes safely
Turn the machine off, unplug it and allow the wand to cool. Use the pin on the end of Breville’s supplied cleaning tool to clear each blocked hole. Insert the pin gently; do not enlarge the openings with a drill bit, sewing needle or other hard tool.
5. Remove and soak the tip if needed

Steam works, but the milk does not froth
If the wand produces a strong jet, the machine may be functioning normally. Use fresh, cold milk and fill the jug to just below the “V” at the bottom of its spout. Start with the tip approximately 1–2 cm below the surface near the side of the jug. Create a whirlpool, then bring the tip close enough to the surface to introduce air without large splashes.
