Breville Barista Express Grinder Not Working: Fixes

Fix a Breville Barista Express grinder that is silent, blocked, flashing, overheating, or running without dispensing coffee.

Before you start

Unplug the machine before opening panels or touching internal components. Stop if you see damaged wiring, smell burning, or are unsure about a pressurized or electrical part.

If your Breville Barista Express grinder is not working, check what the machine does—not just whether grounds appear. Flashing FILTER SIZE lights usually point to an unlocked hopper. A running motor with no grounds points to an empty, blocked, or damp grinder. A machine that stopped during repeated use may need a 30–60 minute cool-down. A completely silent grinder after these checks needs service diagnosis.

Stop immediately for these symptoms

Unplug the machine if the grinder makes a metallic clack, smells burnt, smokes, sparks, trips a breaker, or has liquid inside the grinder. Do not repeatedly trigger a stalled motor.

Step 1: check power and overheating

If the whole machine is unresponsive, troubleshoot power before the grinder. If the machine was operating and then stopped, Breville says the pump or grinder may have activated the safety thermal cut-out. Press POWER to switch off, unplug the machine, and allow it to cool for about 30–60 minutes. If operation does not return or the shutdown repeats, contact Breville support.

Step 2: lock the bean hopper

The hopper is part of a safety interlock. On the BES870, flashing FILTER SIZE LEDs mean the bean hopper is not correctly attached.

  1. Switch the machine off.
  2. Turn the hopper to UNLOCK and lift it away.
  3. Brush loose beans and coffee from the hopper seat and locking tabs.
  4. Align the hopper, lower it fully, and rotate to LOCK.
  5. Power the machine on and confirm the FILTER SIZE lights no longer flash.

Do not defeat the interlock or hold it down with a tool. If the hopper is correctly locked but the lights still flash, the interlock may need professional inspection.

Step 3: distinguish a silent grinder from a blocked grinder

You hear the motor

A normal motor sound with no grounds usually means coffee cannot travel through the burr chamber or chute. Confirm that beans are present. If they are, stop testing and clean the grinder.

You hear a hum

A hum without rotation suggests the burr mechanism is loaded or stalled. Turn the machine off and unplug it immediately. Repeated starts can overheat the motor.

You hear nothing

Make sure the hopper is locked and the portafilter is pressing the grind-activation switch in the cradle. If the rest of the machine works but the grinder remains silent after one careful test and a full cool-down, the fault is beyond routine cleaning.

Step 4: clear the common blockage

Breville’s standard cleaning sequence removes coffee-oil buildup that can impede grinder performance.

  1. Empty the hopper. Unlock it, remove the beans, reinstall it, and lock it.
  2. Run the grinder empty. Stop when no more grounds emerge.
  3. Switch off and unplug. Remove the hopper.
  4. Remove the upper burr. Unlock it and lift it by the wire handle; keep hands away from the sharp edges.
  5. Brush the upper burr. Use the supplied cleaning brush.
  6. Brush the lower burr and chute. Remove compacted grounds from the visible surfaces and outlet.
  7. Reinstall carefully. Seat and lock the upper burr, then install and lock the hopper.
  8. Test with a few dry beans. Stop if the grinder hums, clacks, or still fails to dispense.

If standard cleaning does not clear the outlet, the manual provides an advanced procedure that removes the lower burr and grind-fan stack with a 10 mm socket and long-nose pliers. Follow the full sequence in our Breville Barista Express grinder repair guide; washer order and nut direction matter.

Step 5: check for moisture

Water or moisture in the grinder chamber can bind fine grounds into a plug. Breville lists this as a cause of “no ground coffee coming from grinder.” Keep the machine unplugged, clean the chamber and chute, and allow every part to dry thoroughly before reassembly. Breville says airflow from a hair dryer may be used; avoid high heat and never blow loose objects deeper into the machine.

Step 6: test the dose controls

If coffee comes out but the amount is wrong, the grinder is working. Select SINGLE for the 1 CUP basket or DOUBLE for the 2 CUP basket. Start the GRIND AMOUNT dial near 3 o’clock, then adjust toward MORE or LESS so the tamped dose reaches the intended basket level. Use the Barista Express grinder settings guide for a complete dial-in process.

What a loud grinder means

Breville identifies a blockage or foreign object as the primary cause of a loud grinder. A small stone can arrive in a bag of beans, and compacted oily grounds can also create noise. Stop the grinder as soon as the sound changes, unplug the machine, empty the hopper, and inspect the burr chamber. Do not continue grinding to “push it through.”

Why the grinder keeps clogging

  • Very oily dark-roast beans leave residue on burrs and chute surfaces.
  • Water entered the hopper or burr chamber.
  • The grinder was reassembled before the burrs were dry.
  • The grind is extremely fine and the chute already contains compacted coffee.
  • A foreign object entered with the beans.
  • The upper burr is not fully seated or locked.
  • Cleaning has removed the symptom but not the deeper chute blockage.

Store beans dry, never pour water into the hopper, brush the burrs periodically, and stop as soon as output slows or the grinder sound changes.

Do not try these shortcuts

  • Do not reach into the grinder while it is plugged in.
  • Do not defeat the hopper safety interlock.
  • Do not add water, detergent, rice, or another improvised cleaner to the burr chamber.
  • Do not repeatedly run a humming or stalled motor.
  • Do not force the grind-size dial.
  • Do not open the mains-voltage case unless you are qualified and accept the warranty and electrical risks.
  • Do not order a motor or burr solely because no grounds appeared.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my Breville grinder not dispensing coffee?

Check for beans first. If the motor runs, the BES870 manual points to a blocked grinder chamber or chute, or moisture in that area. Clean and dry the burr assembly and chute.

Why is the grinder completely silent?

A hopper that is not locked can prevent normal operation; flashing FILTER SIZE lights support that diagnosis. If the hopper is locked, the machine has cooled, and the grind-activation switch is being pressed but there is still no sound, arrange service.

How long should I let an overheated Barista Express cool?

Breville’s troubleshooting guide says about 30–60 minutes after switching off and unplugging the machine. If the problem persists, contact Consumer Support.

Can wet coffee beans stop the grinder?

Moisture in the chamber or chute can cause grounds to bind and block output. Empty, clean, and thoroughly dry the grinder before testing again.

Why are the FILTER SIZE lights flashing?

On the BES870, this indicates that the bean hopper is not attached correctly. Clear debris and lock the hopper fully.

Can I keep using pre-ground coffee while the grinder is broken?

You can use pre-ground coffee in the appropriate Dual Wall basket if the rest of the machine operates normally and there is no burning smell, electrical fault, leak, or repeated shutdown. Do not power a jammed grinder unnecessarily.
