Nespresso Vertuo Next Coffee Grounds in Cup: Run the Cleaning Cycle

Finding grounds in coffee from a Vertuo Next? Eject the capsule, run its one-liter cleaning procedure twice, then test with a fresh capsule.

Before you start

Unplug the machine before opening panels or touching internal components. Stop if you see damaged wiring, smell burning, or are unsure about a pressurized or electrical part.

Quick answer: If you find coffee grounds in a cup from the Nespresso Vertuo Next, Nespresso’s troubleshooting table says to run the machine’s cleaning procedure twice. Eject the used capsule, leave the head empty, fill the tank and put a container holding at least 1 L / 34 fl oz under the outlet. When the light is steady white, lock the head and press the button three times within two seconds. Let the cycle finish before repeating it. If grounds continue with fresh, undamaged capsules, contact Nespresso.

Scope: Vertuo Next as described in the linked user manual. The controls and light colors can differ across Vertuo models and revisions. Reviewed October 10, 2026.

Safety: The cleaning water and a used capsule can be hot. Never open the locked head during a running cycle. If a capsule is stuck rather than ejecting normally, switch off and unplug, and contact Nespresso rather than prying at sharp internal parts. Keep the capsule container and a suitable collection vessel in place.

Confirm what is in the cup

A few dark specks that settle at the bottom after brewing are different from the normal crema on top. The practical test is whether the specks recur across fresh capsules after a complete cleaning cycle. Do not assume that the grinder is faulty: Vertuo Next uses sealed capsules and has no user-adjustable bean grinder. A damaged or previously punctured capsule may also be worth noting, but the manual’s first remedy for grounds in the cup is the cleaning program, not replacing a part.

Run the Vertuo Next cleaning procedure twice

  1. Prepare the tank and used-capsule bin. Rinse the water tank and lid, fill with fresh drinking water and seat the tank correctly. Open the machine head so the used capsule ejects. Empty and rinse the capsule container and drip tray. Ensure no capsule remains in the chamber.
  2. Make room for rinse water. Rinse the cup support and place a vessel of at least 1 L (34 fl oz) under the coffee outlet. Close the machine head and rotate the handle to its fully LOCKED position.
  3. Start one full cycle. Wait until the machine has heated and shows a steady white light. Press the coffee button three times within two seconds. It should blink rapidly; Nespresso says flow can take up to two minutes to begin and the procedure takes about seven minutes. Let it finish until the light becomes steady again.
  4. Repeat once. Empty the collection vessel safely, refill the tank if needed and run the same complete cleaning cycle a second time. Nespresso explicitly recommends two cycles for grounds in the cup. Do not open the head mid-cycle.
  5. Check the result. With a fresh undamaged capsule correctly positioned, brew one drink into a clean clear cup. If the same particles recur, record the symptom and contact Nespresso support.

The cleaning program uses an empty capsule chamber and a container large enough for the rinse.

What to avoid

The preset cleaning procedure is a water rinse; it is not the chemical descaling procedure. Do not put detergent, abrasive cleaner or a tool into the head to chase coffee particles. Nespresso instructs owners to wipe accessible coffee outlet surfaces with a soft damp cloth and warns against immersion and dishwasher cleaning. If the machine instead has no water flow or an orange blinking light, diagnose that symptom separately.

When to seek help

Stop and contact Nespresso if the grounds remain after both full cycles and a fresh capsule, the capsule fails to eject, a leak develops around the head, or the machine will not enter cleaning mode despite the correct sequence. This is a useful point for support to inspect the capsule and machine; the presence of grounds alone does not establish which internal part, if any, has failed.

Tools and time

Use fresh drinking water, a clean damp cloth, a collection container of at least 1 L, and a clear test cup. Each cleaning program may take up to seven minutes, plus preparation and cooling time. No replacement part is specified by the manual for this first check.

FAQ

Can I run cleaning with a capsule inside?

No. Nespresso says to eject the used capsule and make sure none is in the machine before starting the program.

How many cycles should I run?

For coffee grounds in the cup, the Vertuo Next troubleshooting table says to perform the cleaning procedure twice.

Why does nothing flow immediately after the triple press?

The manual says it can take up to two minutes before cleaning water starts flowing. If the light and machine behavior do not match the cleaning procedure, check the lock, tank and exact model manual rather than opening the head while it may be running.
