Quick answer: This JURA E8 message means the machine has stopped a ground-coffee preparation because the amount was insufficient, according to JURA’s manuals. Start by checking which preparation sequence your E8 uses and whether you added a measured dose to the powder chute at the right point. The manuals checked use one level JURA measuring spoon for a single espresso and set a maximum of two level spoons. Do not keep topping up a failed attempt. If a correctly followed preparation produces the same warning again, stop adding coffee and contact JURA with the exact model and sequence.
Make sure this is the message you are troubleshooting
“Not enough ground coffee” is different from “Fill bean container.” The first belongs to the pre-ground preparation described here; filling the bean hopper does not correct a missed powder dose. It is also different from coffee that brews successfully but tastes weak.
Take a photo of the display and note what you selected just before it appeared. Were you intentionally making decaf from powder, or trying to make your normal bean-based drink? That distinction is more useful than changing the grinder immediately.
The order of operations depends on your E8
JURA has used the E8 name across several generations. Match the product number and controls to the manual rather than following a video solely because its title says E8.
| Manual checked | How the ground-coffee preparation starts |
|---|---|
| E8/E800, 2019 touchscreen manual | From the start screen, opening the filler-funnel cover brings up the ground-coffee prompt. The espresso selection follows adding the dose and closing the cover. |
| E8 NAA, North American manual | Enter Specialty Selection, choose Ground coffee and Espresso, then add powder when prompted. Close the cover and select Next. |
| E8 EB/SB manual | Uses the selection-first sequence shown below. Do not substitute it for an unmatched newer interface. |
These are interface differences, not evidence that your machine is faulty. If your screen has a different sequence, stop here and use its own “Ground coffee” section.
Check the dose without overfilling
Have ready: suitable ground coffee, the JURA measuring spoon supplied for your machine, a cup, and your matching manual. No replacement part or screwdriver is needed.
A level measure has no heap above the rim. Do not substitute a random kitchen tablespoon and assume the amount is equivalent. This guide does not convert the scoop to a universal gram weight: that would depend on the coffee and how the measure is filled.
JURA’s single-espresso example uses one level spoon. Its two-spoon limit is a ceiling, not an instruction to double the dose whenever a warning appears. If you have already added several doses or can see coffee accumulating in the chute, do not add another.
One controlled preparation: E8 NAA and EB/SB
Use this sequence only when it matches your machine. Start with the machine ready for use and no unresolved accumulation from previous attempts.
- Put an espresso cup under the coffee outlet.
- Hold the button identified in your manual as opening Specialty Selection for two seconds. Choose Ground coffee, then Espresso.
- Wait for Please add ground coffee. Open the powder-chute cover and add one level measuring spoon.
- Close the cover and press Next. JURA specifies preparing the drink within approximately one minute of adding the powder.
- Let the machine finish. Note whether it dispenses normally, stops with the same message, or produces only drips.

On the 2019 touchscreen version, use the cover-first sequence in the table instead. Do not press Next if that control is not part of your model’s instructions.
What the result tells you
- The espresso now brews: keep using the matching preparation order and measured dose. No repair is indicated by this successful comparison alone.
- The machine returns to ready after a delay: the manual describes an approximately one-minute preparation window. A timeout and an insufficient-dose warning should be recorded as separate observations.
- Coffee comes out only in drops: the checked manuals warn that overly fine pre-ground coffee can restrict the system. Use the E8 slow-flow guide; adding more powder is not the next test.
- The same warning returns despite the correct sequence: stop retrying and contact support. A repeated message does not identify a particular sensor, motor or brew-unit part.
If you meant to brew from beans, check whether a ground-coffee preselection remains active on your version. Do not add powder merely to get past a prompt during a drink you intended to make from beans.
When to stop and ask JURA
Stop if powder remains piled in the opening, a foreign material was added, the machine makes an abnormal mechanical noise, or the warning repeats after the controlled check. Do not push a screwdriver or other tool down the chute, pour water into it, or open the housing to look for a sensor.
Send support the product number, a display photo, the coffee used, your measuring method, and the exact point at which preparation stopped. Include whether ordinary bean-based coffee worked before this happened. That gives support a useful distinction without repeated test cycles.
If the problem includes a loud grinder, use the separate grinder-noise guidance. A numbered Error 8 is also a different fault. Stop immediately for smoke, a burning smell or water near electrical parts; disconnect power only when safe.
Common questions
Should I add two more scoops when the warning appears?
No. Do not stack new doses onto an unsuccessful attempt. Check the sequence and amount already added; persistent failure needs advice rather than more powder.
Will changing the built-in grinder help?
It does not change the particle size of coffee you have already bought or ground separately and placed in the powder chute. Keep that separate from diagnosing a bean-grinding problem.
Should I run a cleaning tablet to clear the warning?
This message is not itself a cleaning-tablet prompt. Follow the E8 cleaning program when required, using its own sequence. Do not drop a tablet into an ordinary coffee preparation.
