Breville Barista Express BES870 Not Heating: Read the Lights First

BES870 not heating? Use the POWER and STEAM/HOT WATER lights to separate a stalled warm-up from a cool cup, then try safe, manual-backed checks.

Before you start

Unplug the machine before opening panels or touching internal components. Stop if you see damaged wiring, smell burning, or are unsure about a pressurized or electrical part.

Quick answer: If a Breville Barista Express BES870 powers on but will not heat, check the STEAM/HOT WATER dial first. Breville’s troubleshooting table says a dial left outside STANDBY can prevent the normal heat-up sequence when the machine is switched on. A flashing POWER light during warm-up is normal; wait until it stops flashing. If the lights show ready but only the finished drink tastes cool, preheat the cup and portafilter before assuming the heater has failed. If water and steam remain cold after the normal start-up checks, stop repeated tests and arrange qualified service.

This guide covers the Barista Express BES870 family; the US model is commonly marked BES870XL. Check the full rating-label code and regional manual before using the exact button sequence below. Breville’s US/Canada/Mexico instruction book separates “Machine does not heat up” from “Coffee not hot enough.” A cold cup is a symptom, not a measurement of an internal heating part.

Choose the symptom before a fix

Diagnostic chart for Barista Express BES870 heat problems: no lights, flashing POWER, flashing steam light, steady lights with lukewarm drink, and persistent lack of heat
Original CoffeeFixGuide symptom chart. It sorts safe checks; it cannot confirm an electrical fault.
What you see First check When to stop
Nothing lights up Confirm a working outlet and inspect the dry, accessible plug and cable. If the plug is damaged, wet, or the outlet trips again, do not retry.
POWER light flashes after switch-on Allow the normal warm-up to finish. Check that the dial is at STANDBY. If the sequence does not complete after normal use, contact support.
STEAM/HOT WATER light flashes At start-up, return the dial to STANDBY. During steam or hot-water use, flashing can mean that function is heating. If it keeps flashing abnormally or heat never arrives, stop testing.
Lights steady, but the drink feels cool Preheat cup and portafilter; compare plain espresso with a milk drink. If even normal hot-water and steam functions fail, seek diagnosis.

Safety: Do not open the casing, bypass a thermal cut-out, probe live terminals or measure the heater with the machine plugged in. Stop for a burning smell, smoke, a damaged cable, repeated breaker trip, or water near electrical parts. Let the group head, wand and portafilter cool before touching them. If the plug or socket is wet, isolate power safely rather than reaching into water.

Tools for these checks

  • Exact BES870 manual and the model label; the dial/button sequence can vary by region or revision.
  • A known working outlet, used only if the plug, cable and worktop are dry and undamaged.
  • A cup and the machine’s normal hot-water outlet for preheating, if the unit operates normally.
  • A short note of which light flashes, what the dial was set to, and whether the steam or hot-water function works. No cover-removal tools are needed.

1. No lights: check power, not the heater

If pressing POWER does nothing, “not heating” is too broad to identify a heating fault. With dry hands and a dry, intact plug, check that the socket works with another ordinary appliance. Confirm the machine’s cord is intact and the plug is fully seated. Do not use a damaged cord, and do not keep resetting a tripped breaker. If the outlet is known to work but the BES870 remains dark, request service; the symptom alone does not establish whether the switch, supply or internal control is at fault. This is a different path from the flashing-light problem in Breville’s troubleshooting table.

2. POWER flashes: let the normal warm-up finish

Breville says the POWER light flashes as the machine heats, then stops flashing when operating temperature is reached and the control-panel lights illuminate. A slow POWER flash may instead indicate sleep mode after a period of inactivity; the manual describes reactivation by pressing a button other than POWER and allowing reheating. Check the position of the STEAM/HOT WATER dial and give the machine its normal startup cycle before judging the espresso temperature. If the light never settles during normal use or the machine repeatedly stops, turn it off and use Breville support. The light pattern does not identify a failed thermocoil.

3. STEAM/HOT WATER flashes: check the dial’s context

If the machine was just turned on and does not proceed to normal heat-up, return the STEAM/HOT WATER dial fully to STANDBY. Breville lists this exact dial position as the easy solution to “Machine does not heat up” with a flashing STEAM/HOT WATER light at switch-on.

If you deliberately selected STEAM or HOT WATER, a flashing light can be normal while that function comes up to temperature. The light stops flashing when the selected function is ready. Breville also says steam is disabled after five minutes of continuous steaming until the dial is returned to STANDBY. Record what you selected before treating every flash as an error. If the dial is back at STANDBY and the expected startup sequence still fails, contact service.

4. Lights steady, but the coffee is lukewarm

First compare a plain espresso with a milk drink. A cold ceramic cup, cold portafilter or cool milk can lower the temperature you feel at the first sip even when the machine completed its heat-up cycle. Breville recommends rinsing the cup and portafilter with water from the hot-water outlet, placing the cup on its warming tray, and drying the portafilter thoroughly before adding coffee. For milk drinks, follow the manual’s milk-texturing guidance; do not touch the metal steam wand to judge temperature.

Try those preparation steps before changing a setting. If the machine has poor flow as well as cooler coffee, use the separate no-water guide; the manual also lists descaling among possible remedies for poor flow or coffee that is not hot enough. Follow the BES870 descaling instructions when due. Descaling is not a reliable repair for a machine with no electrical heat.

5. Consider the water-temperature setting only after the basics

The cited US/Canada/Mexico manual allows small adjustments around the default brew-water setting. This is for a machine that is otherwise working, not a fix for cold water or a failed warm-up. To check the setting in that manual: switch the machine off; hold PROGRAM and press POWER; the illuminated button shows the current selection. Within five seconds press PROGRAM for default or 1 CUP for +2°F (about +1°C). The machine beeps twice to confirm. The manual also documents +4°F on 2 CUP. Use the setting only if the edition matching your label shows the same controls, and change one step at a time. Do not assume a warmer cup implies the heater’s parts need replacing.

When service and parts make sense

If the machine starts normally yet hot water and steam both remain cold, or it repeatedly stops before becoming ready, you need a diagnosis. The thermocoil, sensor, thermal protection and control electronics are possible service findings, not interchangeable parts to order from a symptom. Do not buy an internal heater by model name alone; confirm the exact revision and an actual test result with qualified service. The parts register covers compatibility caveats, and a written estimate can be compared in our repair or replace calculator. If steam fails while espresso and hot water behave normally, start with the steam-wand guide instead.

FAQ

Why does the steam light blink as soon as I turn on the BES870?

Check the dial. Breville says a STEAM/HOT WATER dial outside STANDBY at switch-on can hold up the normal heat-up sequence. Flashing during a deliberately selected steam or hot-water function has a different meaning: that function may still be heating.

Is a flashing POWER light a heating failure?

No, not by itself. It flashes during the ordinary warm-up and also flashes slowly in sleep mode. A light that never reaches the expected ready state after the normal sequence needs more investigation.

Should I replace the thermocoil because my latte is not hot enough?

No. Compare plain espresso, preheat the cup and portafilter, and check milk preparation first. A part replacement needs a confirmed fault, not just the finished drink’s temperature.
