Quick answer: If your De’Longhi Magnifica Evo coffee feels lukewarm, first warm the cup with hot water and run the machine’s rinse cycle before making the next black espresso. If that changes the result, heat loss into a cold cup or a cooled internal circuit was part of the problem. If black coffee remains unusually cool, check the coffee-temperature setting for your exact ECAM29X variant and whether descaling is due. A cool milk drink by itself does not prove a failed heater.
Magnifica Evo includes several ECAM29X versions and EX revisions. De’Longhi’s support pages instruct owners to check the model number on the underside of the machine or its manual; button sequences and available menus can differ. Start with a comparable test

Choose the same black espresso recipe, cup size and coffee amount for two tests. Taste carefully rather than drinking scalding coffee. If you have a suitable food thermometer, note where and when you measure: a reading in a cool cup after the drink has sat is not the temperature of coffee leaving the spouts. Do not compare that reading with a different model’s claimed outlet temperature.
| Observation | First check | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| First coffee after a long pause is cool; next one is warmer | Run the rinse cycle before brewing | The internal circuit has cooled between drinks. |
| Small espresso cools quickly in a heavy mug | Prewarm and empty the mug | The vessel absorbs a noticeable share of heat. |
| Black coffee is acceptable but cappuccino feels cool | Compare the milk portion separately | Added cold milk changes the finished drink; see the milk-system guide if its delivery is abnormal. |
| Both black coffee and rinse water remain unusually cool | Check temperature setting, overdue descale and service messages | A persistent machine-side symptom deserves closer diagnosis. |
1. Prewarm the cup
Rinse the cup with hot water, empty it, then brew the same espresso promptly. De’Longhi specifically recommends warming cups for Magnifica Evo temperature complaints. This matters most with a small shot and a thick ceramic or cold glass cup. Keep fingers clear of the hot-water outlet and hold a warmed cup by its handle.
If this single change makes the drink comfortable, there is no reason to open the machine or order a heater. If it is still cool, leave the cup prewarmed for the next comparison and warm the circuit.
2. Run a rinse cycle to warm the internal path
Place a heat-safe container beneath the coffee spouts and start the rinse function shown in your model’s manual. For the ECAM29X.6Y–.8Y family, De’Longhi’s support explains that the circuits can cool after only two to three minutes without a coffee and recommends pressing and holding the rinse control for a few seconds before brewing. Some EX:2 instructions identify this as the B6 button held for at least five seconds. Do not use that timing blindly on another panel: check the exact suffix and button symbols first.
Let the rinse finish, discard the water and immediately make the same black espresso into the warmed cup. If it is distinctly warmer, the cause was likely the starting temperature of the cup and circuit. A rinse can also help identify a separate flow issue: if little water appears, investigate the water path rather than repeating temperature adjustments.
3. Check the coffee-temperature setting
If prewarming did not help, consult the settings menu for your precise ECAM29X version and select a hotter coffee-temperature level, if available. The Magnifica Evo EX:2 manual lists a low coffee-temperature setting among causes of cool coffee. Change one level, save it, then repeat the same black-coffee test. Record the old level so you can restore it if the result is not useful.
This setting concerns coffee preparation. It does not make cold milk hot before the milk system processes it, and it does not repair weak heating. Avoid moving every setting at once; that makes the result harder to interpret.
4. If still cool, check maintenance and related symptoms
The EX:2 troubleshooting table also lists overdue descaling. If the machine is due and can dispense normally, follow the complete model-specific Magnifica Evo descaling guide, including its rinses. Check that the machine’s water-hardness setting matches your supply afterward. Do not run an extra descale merely to test the temperature when the previous cycle was recent and the machine gives no maintenance indication.
Look at whether hot water from its own outlet is also unexpectedly cool, whether flow has weakened, and whether warning icons appear. Our Magnifica Evo indicator guide helps identify a displayed warning; the no-coffee guide applies if flow is the real problem. If black coffee and hot water remain abnormally cool after the simple checks, contact De’Longhi support or a qualified technician rather than attempting a live heater or thermostat test.
Tools, parts and safety
You need a heat-safe cup and a container to catch rinse water. A kitchen thermometer can help compare repeated drinks under the same conditions, but it is optional. No replacement part is justified by a single lukewarm cup. Do not disassemble the case, bypass temperature controls or touch hot spouts. Stop using the machine if it smells burnt, trips a circuit or leaks near the power connection.
FAQ
Is coffee from a Magnifica Evo supposed to be boiling hot?
No. Brewed coffee need not boil. De’Longhi’s support for some Magnifica Evo variants discusses coffee temperature at the spout and advises prewarming the vessel to retain it. The temperature in a finished cup will be lower and depends on cup mass, drink size and added milk.
Why is the second cup hotter than the first?
The first drink may lose heat to the cold internal path and cup. De’Longhi recommends a rinse cycle to warm the circuit; prewarming the cup tests the other source of heat loss.
Should I change the grinder to fix cool coffee?
Grind affects extraction and flow, but it is not the first temperature check. Compare identical black coffees in a warmed cup after a rinse before changing grind. If the drink is slow or only drips, diagnose that symptom separately.
Can I use instructions for an ECAM290.21 on an ECAM290.81?
Use the guidance that matches the full model and EX suffix. The general tests of warming the cup and circuit apply across variants, but a control-panel combination or settings menu may differ.
