Quick answer: A dirty basket or coffee-coated group screen can disturb extraction on a Gaggia Classic Pro. After switching off and letting the machine cool, remove and wash the filter basket, rinse it thoroughly and brush visible grounds from the group screen. Retest water flow before assuming a pump or internal blockage. This is an external cleaning routine, not a reason to open the machine.
When this helps
Use the routine after everyday brewing residue builds up or if the espresso stream becomes uneven. If water does not come from the group head even with the portafilter removed, see our no-water-from-group-head diagnosis; a basket cannot block flow when it is not attached.
Tools and cautions
- Warm water, a soft brush and a clean cloth
- A small tool suitable for lifting your basket from the portafilter without damaging its rim
- Optional Gaggia-recommended cleaning product used according to its own directions
Safety: The group, portafilter and water can burn. Switch off, unplug and let the machine cool before touching the group screen. Do not push a metal pick into screen holes or loosen hot or pressurized fittings.
Clean accessible brewing surfaces
Clean the basket and group screen
- Remove the portafilter. Once cool, lift out the filter basket. Wash the basket with warm water, paying attention to visible coffee deposits; rinse under running water.
- Inspect the basket holes against a light. Repeat the wash if coffee residue remains. The Classic manual describes a hot-water soak for a basket that is obstructed; handle hot water carefully and follow the manual’s method if a normal wash is insufficient.
- Brush loose grounds from the cool group screen and surrounding accessible surface. Do not dismantle the shower plate for this routine clean.
- Reinstall the dry basket. With the machine reassembled and your hands dry, reconnect power and switch on. Run a short water flush into a cup with the portafilter removed, keeping clear of hot water, then brew a test shot.
If extraction is still poor
Compare flow with and without the portafilter. Normal open-group flow but slow espresso suggests the basket, dose or grind needs another look. Our fast-shot guide covers the opposite pattern. If water leaks around a locked portafilter, inspect the seal using the portafilter leak guide. Seek service if the machine trips power, leaks internally or cannot dispense safely.
FAQ
Should I remove the group screen every day?
No. This routine cleans accessible surfaces; only dismantle according to the instructions for your exact machine and tools.
Will cleaning fix a failed pump?
