Quick answer: Rinse the Breville Barista Express BES870 filter basket and portafilter under hot water immediately after brewing to remove coffee oils. If one or more basket holes are blocked, use the pin on the supplied cleaning tool. If they remain blocked, Breville specifies dissolving a cleaning tablet in hot water, soaking the basket and portafilter for about 20 minutes, and rinsing thoroughly.
What a blocked basket looks like
A slow or uneven stream with one basket, while water flows freely from the empty group head, points toward the coffee puck or basket. Check the basket against a light after removing spent coffee. The portafilter spouts and basket type matter too: do not assume that a normal extraction change is a pump fault. Our low-pressure diagnosis covers other patterns.
Supplies and safety
- Hot water, a clean sink and the cleaning pin supplied with the BES870
- A Breville-compatible cleaning tablet and a heat-safe vessel if ordinary rinsing fails
Let the metal parts cool enough to handle safely. The pin is for a blocked basket hole; do not enlarge a hole or use a drill. Follow the tablet label and rinse away all cleaning solution before making a drink.

Clean from simple to deeper
- After the shot, knock out the puck and rinse the basket and portafilter under hot running water.
- Hold the basket toward a light. If a hole is visibly blocked, gently clear it with the supplied cleaning-tool pin, then rinse again.
- If holes remain blocked, dissolve a cleaning tablet in hot water as directed and soak the basket and portafilter for approximately 20 minutes. Rinse both thoroughly.
- Dry the basket before the next grind dose. Compare water flow through the empty group and the cleaned basket before changing grind settings.
What this does not replace
The basket soak is not the machine’s group cleaning cycle and does not descale its water circuit. If water does not come from the group even with the portafilter removed, use our no-water guide. A cracked basket or bent rim calls for a compatible replacement, not more forceful cleaning.
FAQ
Should I soak after every shot?
No. The manual calls for rinsing after use and suggests the tablet soak when holes stay blocked.
Can I use any sharp needle?
Use the supplied cleaning tool and avoid damaging the calibrated basket holes.
