Breville Error Codes and Warning Lights

Choose the warning shown on your machine. Check the model number and compare the full pattern with the manufacturer’s instructions before trying a fix.

Select your brand, then confirm the exact model and full code or light pattern. Indicator lights can change meaning when they flash instead of staying on. This database distinguishes manufacturer-documented meanings from possible causes; it does not diagnose an internal component from a display alone.

Barista Express

Check the rating label and model revision before following a repair or reset procedure.

Indicator

CLEAN / DESCALE flashing

What it means

The Barista Express BES870 requests a cleaning/backflush cycle. Flashing is different from a steady descale reminder.

Possible causes
  • The cleaning reminder has reached its programmed interval.
  • An earlier cleaning cycle may not have finished.
What you can check yourself
  • Confirm that CLEAN / DESCALE is flashing rather than steadily lit.
  • Read the cleaning instructions for the exact BES870 revision.
Diagnostic sequence
  1. Let the machine finish its current operation.
  2. Follow the official cleaning/backflush cycle with the specified tablet and cleaning disc.
  3. Confirm the cycle completes and check the light again.
When to contact service

Contact Breville if the reminder persists after a complete cycle or the machine cannot run the cycle. Stop for leaks near electrical parts.

Indicator

CLEAN / DESCALE steady

What it means

A steady CLEAN / DESCALE light calls for descaling on the BES870.

Possible causes
  • The descale reminder is due.
  • The descale program or required rinse may have been interrupted.
What you can check yourself
  • Check that the light is steady, not flashing.
  • Use the manual for the machine revision and an approved descaling product.
Diagnostic sequence
  1. Prepare the machine exactly as the manual specifies.
  2. Complete the programmed descale stages and rinse.
  3. Check the indicator after the entire program finishes.
When to contact service

Seek Breville support if the complete program cannot finish or the light stays on after the documented procedure.

Indicator pattern

FILTER SIZE lights flashing

What it means

On the Barista Express BES870, flashing FILTER SIZE LEDs indicate that the bean hopper is not correctly locked into position.

Possible causes
  • The hopper was not turned fully to its locked position.
  • Coffee beans or residue may prevent it from seating correctly.
What you can check yourself
  • Confirm that the FILTER SIZE LEDs, rather than the POWER heating light, are flashing.
  • Switch the machine off and check whether the hopper is fully seated.
Diagnostic sequence
  1. Switch off and wait for all movement to stop.
  2. Remove and correctly reinstall the hopper according to the BES870 manual; keep fingers and tools out of the grinder.
  3. Lock it into position, restart once and check the lights.
When to contact service

Contact Breville if the hopper is securely locked but the lights continue flashing or the grinder fails to start.
